…and I don’t mean lycanthropically.

Very few shows ever make me say “Shit that was something real happening in that room”. I can only think of  a handful of sets that were so in my face they rattled my soul. Among them would be the intimate performances of Phil Elverum (Microphones/Mt. Eerie), and Julian Koster (Neutral Milk Hotel, The Music Tapes). It’s no surprise that Wyatt from the Athens, GA based band Werewolves credits Phil and Julian for changing his life. I met Wyatt while on tour with my friends in December. He played a solo set in his living room that changed my life for awesome. I strongly encourage you all to experience something that might shake you out of the monotony of m0dernity. Something that will probably make you say “Shit that was something real happening in that room”.

House Shows

Convent Collective originated out of the phenomenon of House Shows. What better arena than the intimacy of your living room, corridor, roof, bedroom, or even kitchen to enjoy the sincerity of your best friend’s art? In actuality, inviting someone  to your home is one of the most effective methods towards drawing a dedicated fanbase. When done right, the art of hospitality far outshines any treatment one can expect at a bar or musical venue. Consequently, we believe it is important to engage a community out on the streets and inside of homes.

Convent Collective is dedicated to networking individuals and groups who are willing to play, host, or attend a house show.

Some general tips for hosting House Shows:

Know your audience! Who is coming, what needs will you have to cater to?

OK it with/Contact your neighbors! No one wants to live with the person who has ragers and is never invited. :]

Give your self at least a week or two to prepare. It takes time to promote, and last minute invites are not nearly as effective.

Maintain an open line of communication between the artist(s) and host(s). Last minute back-outs, not having necessary equipment, or a place to crash can be a real drag.

All Ages is a big plus, but remember fascist pigs are always looking for a reason to fill their little piggy banks.

Do not be afraid of disaster!

Citizens of the world, behold! Kirstin Huber of the School of Visual Arts in New York City designed the following logos for the Convent Collective.  Wethinks they beautiful, and you?

I wanted to come up with an iconic symbol to represent the collective, and so what I came up with was this idea of a pretty serif C within a big bold C, to represent the different kinds of voices coming together. The three lines in the ‘mouth’ of the C’s can be read like sound/speech coming out of the C, or (I think) as a whole it kind of resembles the iris/pupil an eye…it’s subtle but I was trying to involve both the visual and audial forms of art that people in the collective make. It’s still in progress but as a rough idea I felt like it could stick. Then, I tried representing this mark as collages, to give it a more handmade, personal feel–so it could be something that’s customized and ever-changing.
